Who may consider direct-access testing?

Some adults may consider direct-access testing when the question is focused, the test is available, preparation can be followed, and a realistic follow-up plan exists. Examples include:

  • monitoring a clinician-guided lifestyle change under comparable conditions;

When direct-access testing is not appropriate

Do not use routine online testing to delay urgent or emergency care. Call 911 or seek prompt medical attention for symptoms such as chest pressure or pain, significant trouble breathing, fainting, sudden weakness or speech difficulty, sudden severe headache, major bleeding, severe pain, new confusion, or other potentially life-threatening changes.[8][11]

Direct-access testing is generally not the right first step when:

How to choose a test or panel

Until Ulta’s service or compliance owner reconciles those pages, treat the restricted-state list as unresolved and verify current checkout eligibility, collection location, and order requirements before purchase.[12][13]

Do I still need a healthcare professional?

Often, yes. Direct access changes how testing is obtained; it does not replace professional care for severe or unexplained symptoms, complex history, medication decisions, pregnancy concerns, unexpected results, diagnosis, or treatment.

How do I choose the right test?

Start with one focused question, review the test’s purpose and limits, consider relevant history and prior results, and choose the minimum sufficient option. Seek help when the result could change treatment or several conditions are possible.

Is a larger panel better?
