Hsv 2 IgG Type Specific

Herpes simplex virus testing is performed to identify an acute herpes infection or to detect herpes antibodies, an indication of a previous exposure to herpes. One of the most common viral infections, herpes simplex virus (HSV) exists as two main types, HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both types are contagious and periodically cause small fever blisters (vesicles) that break to form open lesions. HSV-1 primarily causes blisters or "cold sores" around the oral cavity and mouth, while HSV-2 usually causes lesions around the genital area; however, either one can affect the oral or genital area.
*Important Information on Lab Test Processing Times: Ulta Lab Tests is committed to informing you about the processing times for your lab tests processed through a national lab. Please note that the estimated processing time for each test, indicated in business days, is based on data from the past 30 days across the 13 laboratories for each test. These estimates are intended to serve as a guide and are not guarantees. Factors such as laboratory workload, weather conditions, holidays, and the need for additional testing or maintenance can influence actual processing times. We aim to offer estimates to help you plan accordingly. Please understand that these times may vary, and processing times are not guaranteed. Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (IgG), with Reflex to HSV-2 Inhibition Test Description

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2) is primarily associated with genital infections, which can range from mild discomfort to severe clinical conditions affecting neonates and adults. Accurate diagnosis of HSV-2 is crucial for effective management and treatment. The Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (IgG), with Reflex to HSV-2 Inhibition test, offers a robust tool for diagnosing and monitoring this virus. This test is specifically designed to distinguish between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections, utilizing advanced immunoassay techniques.

Test Components and Their Functions:

  • Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (IgG): This initial test measures the IgG antibodies specific to HSV-2, indicating past or present infection.

    • Detection: Positive IgG antibodies suggest exposure to HSV-2.
    • Diagnosis: Differentiates between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections when symptoms are present.
    • Monitoring: Tracks the presence of antibodies over time to monitor past infections or verify the success of treatments.
  • HSV-2 Inhibition Study: This reflex test is conducted if the HSV-2 IgG test result is greater than 1.09. It helps confirm whether the positive result is true by measuring the ability of specific antibodies to block antigen-antibody reactions.

    • Detection: Confirms the specificity of antibodies to HSV-2.
    • Diagnosis: Helps distinguish false positives from true infection, crucial for accurate clinical decisions.
    • Monitoring: Provides detailed insights into the immune response, particularly in managing known HSV-2 carriers.

Methodology:

  • The tests utilize an Immunoassay (IA) methodology, employing recombinant type-specific antigens to accurately identify HSV-1 and HSV-2.

What are the advantages of the HSV –two IgG INHIBITION assay over the western block assay? The HSV-2 IgG Western blot test has long been seen as the best test for spotting HSV-2 IgG reactivity. But studies, like one by Ashley-Morrow and others, have shown that this test isn't as quick at detecting new HSV-2 infections as the HerpeSelect HSV-2 IgG test. The HerpeSelect test can find antibodies about 21 days after symptoms start, while the Western blot test takes about 68 days. This means there's a period of about 47 days where the Western blot might not show a positive result even if someone has HSV-2. The HSV-2 IgG inhibition assay is different. During this 47-day window, if there's more than 60% inhibition, it means the test result is positive for HSV-2. This test is not only faster at finding new infections, but it also has a quicker turnaround time than the Western blot test.

Reference Ranges and Interpretations:

  • Negative: <0.90 – No significant levels of HSV-2 IgG detected.
  • Equivocal: 0.90-1.09 – Uncertain presence of HSV-2 IgG; retesting recommended in 4-6 weeks if recent infection is suspected.
  • Positive: >1.09 – Significant levels of HSV-2 IgG detected; reflex inhibition study will follow if necessary.

Symptoms of HSV-2 to Recognize:

  • Genital Lesions: Blisters or sores around the genital area, often painful.
  • Pain During Urination: Especially when urine contacts the sores.
  • Itching or Irritation: Around the infected area.
  • Flu-like Symptoms: Including fever and swollen lymph nodes during the initial outbreak.
