Bismuth is primarily ingested orally or intramuscularly. Several bismuth compounds are utilized in medicine. Bismuth compounds are thought to be poorly to moderately absorbed after inhalation, topical application, or ingestion. 

Bismuth and its salts can harm the kidneys; however, the damage is usually minor. Large amounts can be lethal. Industrially, it is regarded as one of the least dangerous heavy metals. 

Side effects of bismuth subsalicylate include stomach discomfort. 

  • anal discomfort 
  • anxiousness. 
  • a tongue that is black or 'hairy.' 
  • stools in clay or gray-black 
  • cold symptoms (stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat) 
  • confusion. 
  • constipation (may be chronic)
