HH-1. Hormone Health - Women

The HH-1. Hormone Health - Women panel contains 3 tests with 3 biomarkers.

Brief Description: The HH-1 Hormone Health - Women panel is a comprehensive test designed to evaluate key hormones that play a vital role in women's health. This panel includes tests for DHEA Sulfate, Estradiol, and Estrogen Total. These hormones are crucial for regulating various bodily functions ranging from reproductive health to mood and bone density.

Collection Method: Blood Draw

Specimen Type: Serum

Test Preparation: No preparation required

When and Why the HH-1 Panel May Be Ordered

The HH-1 Hormone Health - Women panel is often ordered for women experiencing symptoms that may be related to hormonal imbalances or disorders. These can include irregular menstrual cycles, menopausal symptoms, fertility issues, unexplained weight gain or loss, fatigue, and mood swings. Healthcare providers may also order this panel as part of a routine health assessment for women, particularly those undergoing hormone replacement therapy or those with a family history of hormone-related disorders.

What the HH-1 Panel Checks For

  • DHEA Sulfate: This test measures the level of DHEA sulfate in the blood. DHEA is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and is a precursor to both estrogen and testosterone. It plays a role in developing secondary sexual characteristics at puberty and affects how the body responds to stress.

  • Estradiol: Estradiol is the most potent form of estrogen produced in the body and is crucial for reproductive and sexual function as well as bone health. This test helps evaluate ovarian function and monitor hormone replacement therapy, among other uses.

  • Estrogen Total: This test measures the total estrogen levels in the body, including estradiol, estriol, and estrone. Estrogen is vital for sexual and reproductive development and plays a role in other bodily functions like bone health, cholesterol regulation, and the menstrual cycle.

Expand Your Health Insights

To further understand your hormone health and gain deeper insights, consider exploring more advanced panels beyond the HH-1 Hormone Health - Women panel. Each subsequent panel adds specific tests, offering a more comprehensive overview of your hormonal balance and potential health concerns.

HH-2 Hormone Health - Women Panel

Building on the foundation of the HH-1, the HH-2 panel includes additional tests for Estrone, Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). These additions offer insights into menopause status, ovarian reserve, and overall reproductive health.

HH-3 Hormone Health - Women Panel

The HH-3 panel extends the HH-2's capabilities by including tests for Insulin-like Growth Factor-1, Pregnenolone, and Progesterone. These additions are particularly useful for evaluating fertility, adrenal function, and the menstrual cycle's luteal phase.

HH-4 Hormone Health - Women Panel

The most comprehensive, the HH-4 panel, includes all the tests from the HH-3 and adds Prolactin, Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG), and Testosterone Free and Total. This panel provides a thorough overview, encompassing reproductive health, thyroid function, and potential indicators of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or other hormonal imbalances.

Conditions Detected by the HH-1 Panel

The HH-1 Hormone Health - Women panel can help detect a variety of conditions and diseases, including but not limited to hormonal imbalances, menopause, and potential fertility issues.

  • Hormonal Imbalances: The tests within the HH-1 panel can indicate imbalances in key hormones, which may lead to symptoms like menstrual irregularities, mood swings, and changes in weight or libido.

  • Menopause and Perimenopause: Changes in estrogen and DHEA sulfate levels can signal the approach or onset of menopause, helping women make informed decisions about their health and treatment options.

  • Fertility Issues: Abnormal levels of estradiol can affect ovulation and reproductive health, potentially indicating underlying fertility issues.

Using HH-1 Panel Results in Treatment and Monitoring

Healthcare professionals utilize the results from the HH-1 Hormone Health - Women panel to tailor treatment plans and monitor the effectiveness of interventions for various conditions.

  • For hormonal imbalances, treatments may involve lifestyle changes, hormone replacement therapy, or medication to address specific symptoms or underlying causes.

  • In managing menopause or perimenopause, the focus may be on symptom relief and preventing long-term health risks associated with decreased estrogen levels, such as osteoporosis.

  • In fertility treatments, estradiol levels can guide interventions and monitor ovulation induction or other reproductive technologies.

The HH-1 Hormone Health - Women panel serves as a crucial tool in understanding and managing women's health issues related to hormonal balance. It offers valuable insights into reproductive health, menopause, and overall well-being. By starting with the HH-1 panel and considering more comprehensive panels as needed, women and their healthcare providers can make informed decisions about health care and interventions.

Also known as: Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate, DHEA SO4, DHEA Sulfate Immunoassay, DHEAS, Transdehydroandrosterone

DHEA SULFATE

DHEA-sulfate test measures the amount of DHEA-sulfate in the blood. DHEA-sulfate is a weak male hormone (androgen) produced by the adrenal gland in both men and women.

Estradiol

Estradiol (estradiol-17 beta, E2) is part of an estrogen that is a group of steroids that regulate the menstrual cycle and function as the main female sex hormones. Estrogens are responsible for the development of female sex organs and secondary sex characteristics and are tied to the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. They are considered the main sex hormones in women and are present in small quantities in men. Estradiol (E2) is the predominant form of estrogen and is produced primarily in the ovaries with additional amounts produced by the adrenal glands in women and in the testes and adrenal glands in men. Estradiol levels are used in evaluating ovarian function. Estradiol levels are increased in cases of early (precocious) puberty in girls and gynecomastia in men. Its main use has been in the differential diagnosis of amenorrhea – for example, to determine whether the cause is menopause, pregnancy, or a medical problem. In assisted reproductive technology (ART), serial measurements are used to monitor follicle development in the ovary in the days prior to in vitro fertilization. Estradiol is also sometimes used to monitor menopausal hormone replacement therapy.
